This past weekend, comic fans from all over descended on the Penn Pavilion Plaza for the 2010 Big Apple Con.
This years Big Apple Con had a con first. This was Lee Majors first ever convention. Yes, the Six Million Dollar Man himself.
Among other media guests were Mary McDonnell, Adam West, Burt Ward, the Brady Bunch brothers, and others. Comic guests included Mark Millar, Rob Liefeld, Mike Grell, and more.
There were was a all day gaming sessions, and great panels like a Q&A with Mark Millar, and a panel with Mary McDonnell. With fun evening events like costume contests and cocktail hour with Adam West and Burt Ward.
As usually, convention organizer Spat Oktan did a great job bringing together all these great guests and retailers. It was well organized as always.
There were 2 issues I did have with Big Apple:
- Big Apple was one week before New York Comic Con. I have no clue what Wizard CEO, Gareb Shamus, was thinking about when he decided on having it a week before NYCC. Was he drunk or was his ego just too big? Shamus has another 8 conventions across the country, coming up. I really think Shamus is stretching these cons too thin.
- Like all Wizard Conventions, there’s a lack of the big 2 comic book publishers, DC and Marvel. Wizard Magazine seems to still have exclusives articles with both, but Wizard can seems to get DC or Marvel to attend any convention. I understand why with Big Apple, but for others…I’m not sure. Whatever it is, Wizard needs to get their act together and mend these relationships.
Overall, the fans I talked too had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed themselves.
