On Tuesday April 26, Disney is releasing the first 2 volumes of The Avengers: Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! on DVD. And so far this series has not failed to excite long time fans and bring some new ones into the world of the Avengers.

The Avengers series has brought brand new life into the animated Marvel Universe, as it desperately needed it. While the direct to DVD’s have been either hit or miss, the Wolverine & X-Men series was extremely disappointing and left a bad taste in this reviewer’s mouth. Marvel has redeemed themselves with the Avengers.

The Avengers storyline for season 1 has been a nice blend of classic and modern stories. Using stories like the birth of the Avengers from Stan Lee & Jack Kirby, to Brian Michael Bendis’ Breakout storyline. Very well done, and head story writer, Christopher Yost, has been doing an amazing job bringing this team to the small screen.

The voice casting has been very favorable with one exception, Eric Loomis as Iron Man. Loomis is just trying way too hard to be Robert Downey Jr, and it comes off as whiny. If any changes need to be made to this show, it’s getting rid of Loomis and using someone else.

These 2 DVD have the first 8 episodes, including the 5 micro episodes that were available on the Disney XD website. Personally 7 episodes per disc at $19.99 isn’t a good value. Disney could have put at least up to episode 19 on these first 2 DVD’s. Especially seeing how Season 1 hasn’t even finished yet.

Both DVD’s have bonus features about what’s coming up for season 2, and I personally I can’t wait.

There’ll be changes to some of the old favorites, with new costume designs for Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, and Nick Fury. Captain America and Nick Fury will be sporting their Ultimate Comics looks, and Thor’s look will be based on Olivier Coipel design. And introducing new characters, with 2 new Avengers, Ms. Marvel & the Vision. Guest stars include the Fantastic Four, Doc Samson, Ronan the Accuser, Ultron, Guradians of the Galaxy (Star-Lord, Quasar -Phyal-Vell, Adam Warlock, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot), the Falcon, Skrulls, and Dr Doom. With all these characters, Season 2 sounds exciting.

Season 2 will involve storylines including the Secret Invasion and Dr Doom. But the major of the season will have to deal with Avengers trying to stay a team.

These 2 DVD’s are a must for any fan of the TV show, and will be available to buy on April 26th.

About Brian "Pendragon" Isaacs

I've been an avid comic collector for over 35 years now, and a huge comic historian buff. I feel it's important that we don't forget what was created in the past and encourage everyone to read it as well. I started Pendragon's Post as way to show another side of comics. One that won't suck up & give something a good review, just because we're friend with them, like most sites do. Right or wrong, we have our own voice.
