Comic Review: Vincent Price: House of Horrors #2 (Bluewater Comics)

Homicide Detective Katherine Cavenaugh wakes up in an alley behind a Goth-themed night club called “B Negative” with slash marks on her throat. She was on the hunt for a murderer who targets young virgins drains their blood before she was assaulted.

As Det. Cavenaugh pieces it all together, she encounters a menagerie of persons who base their lives around movies inspired by the works of Bram Stoker. Ultimately, the investigation leads to cliched old house on the outside of town where “something” is waiting for her.

This is my first encounter with the work of writer Chad Jones. He packed a lot into a 28 page comic book and I found Cavenaugh to be a compelling character. She was more than just a “cop on a quest.”

Oddly, this comic was less “vampire story” and more “detective story” and it works very well. I can’t wait to see more of his work.

The real show stealer in this comic is the art of Francesco Crisci. When first opened, the art invoked similar feelings of when I first saw the work of Alex Ross. I was amazed at how beautiful the art was. It has this weird “digital meets oil paint” feel which makes the pretty in this comic – beautiful, and the scary – down- right horrifying.

This is one of the best comics Bluewater Comics has ever put out and Jones and Crisci need to work together again.

I give this comic four stars. ****

One Response to Comic Review: Vincent Price: House of Horrors #2 (Bluewater Comics)

  1. L.J. Dopp says:

Hello, Don — I was wondering if you would mind adding my credit as cover artist to the credits at the bottom of your excellent coverage of Vincent Price: House of Horrors #2 (“Cover — L.J. Dopp”). I am credited in the actual comic book according to Darren, with whom I spoke on Monday. Just found out this one was out! — This Haunted Palace painting was my FP ad in Famous Monsters’ Lovecraft issue, and is on my home page at ljdopp.com. Thank you!
