AMC The Walking Dead: Social Game (Open Beta)

Ok dead heads…wait can we actually bring that back?

The Deal:

This game has been in development for some time now. I was bummed when spring came and went and the game didn’t drop as promised. I don’t play any Facebook social games anymore. I used to play Farmville and Cafe World but after awhile they just seemed to be more like actual jobs then a fun way to pass the time. So needless to say I was a little worried about this game and what type of experience it would provide from one of my favorite comics and TV series.

Well Rockyou games have put my fears to sleep. While this is not the first The Walking Dead game that has been released, to me, it is the best one.

Gameplay:

This game is a turn based action RPG. You have total customization  of your character from head to toe (to a certain degree). You get to buy various weapons throughout the game as you progress in level. Your weapons break and have a cool down period though. So it’s good to buy at least the first three weapons you can to have back ups. The amount of time you can actually play missions is gauged by your “energy” points. Once you run out you have to let your energy refill. You also have morale points and information points. In order to build these up, you have to talk to the various survivors in your camp. Your energy refills one of three ways.

1) Time. Yes you have to let your character sit for a while and come back
2) Leveling up. This totally refills your energy and is great when you are mid mission and it happens
3) In game purchase of energy “drinks”

You also have a “life” bar when on missions. Three bites from a walker and you have to restart the mission. It’s not a total restart as you will still have your items that you collected or kill count or whatever the mission requires you to do. But starting you from the beginning drains your energy points, so it’s a double edged sword.

Overall thoughts on the game:

I do enjoy this game. I have a affinity towards action turn based strategy RPG’s, so this was right up my alley. The cool down period can be a bummer some times, especially when your into what your doing but it’s kind of a blessing as well. It doesn’t require you to put in vast amounts of time on the game unless you want to. With people’s busy lives a quick 10 to 15 minute journey into TWD is a nice break.

The only negative thing I have to say about the game is the weapons. Of course the “premium” weapons you have to buy and even if you do spend some skull points that they give at the beginning of the game, the items still break. So it kind of gives you that, why the hell did I buy that feeling. It’s nothing that killed the experience for me, just mildly annoying when you are first getting the swing of the game and it’s quirks. You also have to tell yourself that this is still a Beta phase. They are making updates almost weekly with this game so you can tell they want it to be a great experience for the fans.

About Big Rick Alaia

I have have 3 true loves in my life. My son, wife, and comics/toys. I have been reading comics for over 26 years now and been collecting toys for about 20. I am very DC biased so you can imagine I'm all sorts of out of whack since the "New 52". I do enjoy the other comics brands but DC is tops.....even if we aren't on speaking terms right now.
