Comic Review: John Saul’s Blackstone Chronicles TPB (Bluewater)

I am a lover of horror, be it movies, books, or comics. This is a graphic novel based off of John Sauls novel. When I first saw the art work I was a little put off, but decided to push thru it to read the story. I’m glad I did. The panels of the art work are a little confusing, but as you get into the story, I truly believe all was done on purpose to immerse you into the crazy nightmare of the tale.

The graphic novel features four stories of cursed objects, tied together by an abonded asylum and a central character, Oliver. We follow him as he tries to discover their origins and how to stop them. He must also uncover his connection to them and blackouts that plague him. If that doesn’t complicates things, he also finds himself attracted to the local assistant librarian.

Each chapter moves us further into the madness. If you remember Friday the Thirteenth the series, this is a book for you. The murky art starts to make a little more sense. It almost becomes clearer as you along with the main character begin to piece together the puzzle that is this horror mystery.

The tales continue with death and morbid torture. The first story I felt was vague, missing a piece in the begining. The second story erases all memory of that, along with giving us a glimpse of the individual knowingly sending these cursed objects to people. Further down the rabbit hole we go with the third tale, our would be hero trying to discover the truth. We find our hero may be more involved with the asylum and objects then we first thought.

As we traverse to the fourth tale, it begins to reach its culmination, a final confrontation between Oliver, the asylum, the cursed objects and our mysterious villian. I shall not divulge how it ends or the fact that it really doesn’t :o ) If a part two comes out, I will be picking it up. The story is gripping as you get into it, if a little hard to follow panel wise due to the artists rendering. But that is easy to look past for the great tales.

I recommend this as a horror fan and would love to see this story as a movie. A deifnite add to your collection

About Dave Harryman

Hi my name is David Harryman. I was born in raised in Baltimore, Maryland. I am 35 years old and work as a Career Paramedic/Fire Fighter. My love of comics and movies began at a young age. I remember watching reruns of Star Trek on tv in my early years. Then Saturday morning cartoons brought me into the world of Spider-man and His Amazing Friends!. From that point on I was sold. Collecting comics, cards, and figures. As I grew older, collecting gave way to school and life. I never strayed to far from my love of comics. I stopped all together for a few years as career and family took over. Then about 2 years ago, I saw Marvel Universe figures. Here was a line of small figures that not only showed some of my most favorite characters, but also the unsung ones that you would never think to see in an action figure. Suddenly all that passion and love returned for my lost hobby. I broke out all the things I had in storage. I now have a small shop in Joppa Market open on weekends. My father and I run the place specializing in finding old figures and collectibles for those around us. We have built a reputation for delivering hard to find products at fair prices. My own collection has grown again to a respectable amount. Since then I have joined and become an integrable part of Collector's Trading Post. A Facebook community page that assist collectors in finding the collectibles we love and providing a constant stream of media info on all things comic, movie, and toy related. I'm always willing to help another collector and hope to find others that feel the same. Good Luck and Happy Hunting.
