Comic Review: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Fugitoid Micro Series (IDW)

As a kid, one of my all time favorite action figures was Fugitoid from the Ninja Turtles line. I knew nothing about him other than he was a cool looking robot and he was a “good guy.”

When I got older and read the comics, I started to learn more about the character and started to like him even more. There is something really appealing to me about tragic “monster” characters like the Thing from Marvel’s Fantastic Four, Robot Man from DC Comics’ Doom Patrol, and Fugitoid from TMNT. So, it made me really happy to see Fugitoid get his own Micro Series from IDW.

It continues to amaze me that the micro series are so important. This issue not only introduces Fugitoid, but it also brings the two major Ninja Turtle plot lines together in an unexpected way. Not to mention the fact that it also brings us the race of Neutrinos that were such a big part of the 1990s animated series. There is enough information in this one micro series to really get the reader excited while still telling the entire story in a one-shot. The deeper we get into this new TMNT universe, the more of a perfect amalgam it becomes. This is truly the best of both worlds between the old comic and the classic cartoon.

The art and story are both well done which is a pleasant surprise, considering that I have not heard of either the artist or the writer. The art is very realistic and almost reminds you of early Doug Mahnke work. As for the story? Amazing. It finally brings together the Krang and Shredder stories in a way that I did not expect. If you love the Ninja Turtles universe as much as I do, and you want to know how the WHOLE story is connected, get this issue! I give it 3 out of 4 Shells!

About Warner Swopes

The year is 1987- The modern age of comics is born. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is rapidly becoming a phenomenon and Swamp Thing is starting to redefine the horror genre as "Sophisticated Suspense." A maxi-series called Watchmen published by DC Comics is showing the world a new, gritty side to super heroes. Meanwhile, in a small town in Northern Indiana a comic fan is born. Warner Swopes has been reading comics off and on for 20+ years. He is most fond of the characters that were popular when he was born. Along with being a fan of comics, Warner also enjoys a good flick. In this modern age when every movie is a a remake of a remake…his favorite films are the rare gems that slip through the over saturation of redundant reboots. Everyone has an opinion…and Swopes is no different.
