Comic Review: Beware #1(215 Ink)

Beware #1 is a hokey, family friendly story about the bizarre town of Havens Hallow. While this series may be a tad juvenile for the mature reader, this may be a good comic to get the little one interested in comics.

The story kicks off with the mayor of Havens Hallow pitching the town as though he is trying to make us live there, despite the frequent occurrence of random, possibly radium related happenstances. Sure the town may not be the most normal, but it certainly has charm! Saying goodbye to our mayor we are now introduced to our central character, Douglas, who is having a celebratory picnic with his main girl and wife, Debbie, and their son. After hearing a couple mysterious noises Douglas goes to investigate, thinking it may be a bear…because it’s completely rational to try and scare away bears, right? Only if it was that simple…To his shock, larger than life alien frogs have invaded Havens Hallow and even snatched his wife and son while he was busy bear scaring. Obviously Douglas is a brave man who now has the motivation to protect his family at whatever cost.

The idea is good, the way it is played out, however, is a little amateur. Anyone who is over 15 years old is probably going to have a hard time being impressed by this series. As a 20 year old I have to give this story a 2 out of 5 and I say that as someone who absolutely loves the idea of giant alien frogs! But for someone in the 8-15 age range I can give this a rating of 4 out of 5. It has a happy ending, it is not really graphic, even a little educational, and anyone under the benchmark age of 15 should still be amused by the silliness.

Kiaya Kowalski

About Kiaya Kowalski

20 years old and from the dinky town of Hebron, Illinois – The name is Kiaya. And thanks to George Lucas’s choice in spelling, you are probably saying it wrong! Yes, you read that correctly, I am named after a character in the Lucas classic, WILLOW. I was no different than any of my 6 siblings growing up when it came to the duty of watching cartoons. Images of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman, Spiderman, and the X-Men are burned into my mind when I think back on my childhood (Along with Oprah and all the original ABC 7 soaps...but that's a different story). Unfortunately, my two older brothers would find some painful, deranged punishment if I were to stumble upon their comics and video games. However, that never stopped me from having story-lust. I have been writing ever since I could, and my current career path is to work in either the film industry as a script writer, or be a novelist in the literary world (and by no means would argue if I got the best of both worlds). Although, all is easier said than done, until then I am a paid artist at the local Subway crafting deliciousness to feed the starving people of Hebron.
