Comic Review: Let’s Play God #1 (IDW)

Let’s Play God is a dark, adult comic that takes place in what appears to be a community growing more dangerous by the day, and is littered with drugs and low-lifes. IDW has packed enough action and mystery in 25 pages that they may be on the verge of another hit comic.

We meet three central characters Kira, Billy, and Mel, at the conclusion of their band practice. Instead of hanging out with the girls Mel breaks off saying she has things to do, leaving Kira and Billy to do a little hanging without her. However, this leads to a disagreement between Kira and Billy that leaves Billy alone late at night. While walking home buzzed off a four loko, an alcoholic energy drink, she witnesses the murder of a man who is taking pictures of her from inside his apartment. Panicked, she calls the cops but still runs over to the man’s apartment to see if she can help him in case he is still alive. To her surprise she discovers someone she knows at the scene of the crime. As the story continues we start to question which characters we can trust.

This is a comic that doesn’t waste any time getting into the action. If I have a complaint it’s that it ends too fast. Plus, who has dyed hair every color of the rainbow, and has some tattoos and piercings, I’m REALLY hoping that this isn’t another tale of “funny looking kids are up to no good.” I give this issue a 4 out of 5, and am impatiently waiting to see what other ways IDW is going to keep me interested!

Kiaya Kowalski

About Kiaya Kowalski

20 years old and from the dinky town of Hebron, Illinois – The name is Kiaya. And thanks to George Lucas’s choice in spelling, you are probably saying it wrong! Yes, you read that correctly, I am named after a character in the Lucas classic, WILLOW. I was no different than any of my 6 siblings growing up when it came to the duty of watching cartoons. Images of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Batman, Spiderman, and the X-Men are burned into my mind when I think back on my childhood (Along with Oprah and all the original ABC 7 soaps...but that's a different story). Unfortunately, my two older brothers would find some painful, deranged punishment if I were to stumble upon their comics and video games. However, that never stopped me from having story-lust. I have been writing ever since I could, and my current career path is to work in either the film industry as a script writer, or be a novelist in the literary world (and by no means would argue if I got the best of both worlds). Although, all is easier said than done, until then I am a paid artist at the local Subway crafting deliciousness to feed the starving people of Hebron.
